In modern fully automated production lines within Electronics manufacturing there are at times still steps carried out by hand soldering. These are usually because of wires or heat sensitive or plastic through-hole components that cannot be processed using the predominantly surface mount methods. Producing even a small portion of the product by hand introduces variances in an otherwise fully controlled process.
Automated point soldering is discussed for its versatility, speed and convenience. It is also compared with other technologies available including induction, laser and selective wave soldering. The automated point soldering process itself is nearly identical to the original hand soldering technique it replaces but with benefits of repeatability, quality and traceability.
Productivity gains depends on many factors including the soldering consumables used, the product being produced and the labour rates in the region, but productivity increases of 30% over soldering by hand are not uncommon. It is also a method that has excellent return on investment (ROI) with the robot paying for itself within a few years.
The Weller WTBR1000 bench top soldering robot is introduced as an option for any production facility looking to eliminate hand soldering steps within the production cycle. The benefits of the large double drawers, precise wire feed system, traceability and ease of use software are all explained.
